Nick's Tune

about

I was 19 yrs old when I first found a tape of his in a bargain bin in a NYC record store. I think it was 5 bucks. Time Of No Reply. It answered everything. Everything I was looking for was there. He was like the missing piece... his guitar playing, his voice. I had the right hand guitar technique down already thanks to my friend Kenny teaching me the Bruce Cockburn stuff but this lonely sound.. and the elegance of the writing.. and his story of depression I could relate to much too well.... it became the soundtrack to my life for a long time. I brought the tape over to Jeff Buckley's apt. and he looked at me as if was a simpleton. We seemed to share every single artist we loved in common, especially the sad-dark-deep ones, but this one had never been introduced to me. I think he said he couldn't listen to him anymore or something like that and to be careful with it. This was all top-secret stuff at the time.. years before the big Nick Drake comeback and car commercials etc.

A year later I was on a 7 day Greyhound bus journey back to Northern Canada (see 'Northern Town') and all I had to my name was a guitar, a sleeping bag, two bags of East Village bagels, a bottle of water, a bag of rolling tobacco, my journals, some extra batteries, and one cassette in my borrowed walkman. Time Of No Reply. Not too long after that, i wrote this song. It was for Nick, but also for a few other bright and shining friends I lost, to drugs and other things, along the way.

I don't know why it took so long to get a decent recording of this song out, but I like this one. I like it more than just about anything I've ever put out there. I can relate to it.

Song For Nick (Nick's Tune) Indio Saravanja

Nobody can
live in your mind
no one can see you
Nick it's just you
and you can't understand
why no one can free you
or lend you a hand

No one can see you
no one can free you
playing those songs in your mind
songs in your mind
no one can see you

The Four Seasons play
the record spins round
your mother can't wake you
they break down the door
you don't make a sound
i guess those angels must take you
when summer begins

Up on a mountain
down in the valley
playing those songs in your mind
songs in your mind
and when no one can hear me
i feel you near me
playing those songs in my mind
songs in my mind

And there's nothing to do
but sit by a window
for thousands of years
i sit by a window
and then i forget
until it don't matter
and life just goes on
