Moustaki....

Thanks to a life-long friend and one time Fiancee of mine, one night just outside of Barcelona, I heard his voice for the first time. One of those
'aha' moments you never forget. Instant love and brotherhood.

Quite some time later, out on the West Coast, I translated this song of his and changed a few things around to make it all fit together in the English language. A young Quebecois woman wrote him a letter on my behalf and Georges got back to us from Paris right away. He said he loved it and I had his blessing to record it. I sent him about 5 versions over the next few years but the track never fit on any of my record attempts. He liked them all.

A few years later, just after becoming a father, I was working on the oil rigs in Fort St. John and Fort Mc Murray as a trucker during a very bleak and frightening winter for me and some fan/friends of mine in France and Germany got together and decided to save me by booking me my first European tour.

Georges agreed to meet with me in Paris, which I had never seen up to then. The morning we were to meet at a certain cafe on ile Saint Louis, where he lived, Georges was rushed off the hospital and the last words he spoke to his daughter were 'my poor friend Indio.... he will be very sad'. I was devastated. They told me he wouldn't make it home again. I did my concert that evening and then walked around Paris for 3 days and 2 nights in a daze. On the morning I was leaving for Germany I called his place one last time. He had just returned from hospital! A miracle! His daughter put him on the phone and he whispered how sorry he was and that could I please come back very soon. I said yes, though I knew the likelihood wasn't good. I told him he was in my prayers and that he was going to get better and better. He lived another 2 yrs. Mon Cher Ami. Maybe someday we'll meet up somewhere. You never know.

Mamzelle Gibson Moustaki/Saravanja (c) 2012

Mamzelle Gibson
I met you on the sale room floor
of an abandoned music store
out of the way that no one knew
Mamzelle Gibson
I took you straight into my heart
and just like a girl you played the part
or maybe a thief who's love was true

Mamzelle Gibson
Mamzelle Gibson
you were the prettiest to me
of all the girls in Tennessee
you were the prettiest to me
of all the girls in Tennessee

Mamzelle Gibson
you only spoke in English then
and i wanted you to be my friend
so I took a class in Boston town
Mamzelle Gibson
though I'd only lived for 18 years
I needed a place for all my tears
and you never once did let me down

Mamzelle Gibson... (Chorus)

Mamzelle Gibson
you know I tried to be untrue
but they couldn't sing as well as you
turning to music in my hands
Mamzelle Gibson
and now our love will never end
age like a wine our sound will blend
with all the angels in the band

Chorus
Mamzelle Gibson
